The retail landscape is experiencing a notable shift as Big Lots proceeds with store closures, including several more locations across Ohio. A store at 60 E. Schrock Rd. in Westerville is among the latest to join the list of more than 56 stores slated to close, an announcement that underscores the company's ongoing financial tribulations. NBC4i reported including this location alongside others, such as 1733 Pearl Rd. STE 125 in Brunswick, 26425 Great Northern Plaza in North Olmstead, and 6235 Wilson Mills Rd. in Highland Heights.
WBNS states these closures are part of a broader strategy following Big Lots' Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing. The retailer reported a net loss of $205 million in the quarter ending May 4, with President and CEO Bruce Thorn attributing the downturn to "a continued pullback in consumer spending by our core customers, particularly in high ticket discretionary items." In total, the company is shutting down at least 550 stores nationwide.
The wave of closures is not the only blow to the Big Lots workforce. An additional move by the retailer will see its distribution center at 300 Phillipi Rd. in West Columbus cease operations by the end of October. This decision was determined after a court filing and will result in the loss of nearly 400 jobs. A prior notice of this action was filed with the City of Columbus. However, it did not explicitly explain the center's closure.
The decision to file for bankruptcy comes after a significant net loss of $238 million reported during its second quarter this year. As the company strides toward reorganizing its operations, President and CEO Bruce Thorn has mentioned that, while most locations are profitable, it utilizes the bankruptcy process to optimize its store fleet further. We intend "to use the tools afforded by this process to continue optimizing our store fleet in an orderly manner," Thorn told NBC4i. A sale agreement with private equity firm Nexus Capital is in place to acquire all the company’s assets and business operations.
