A devastating fire swept through a 16-unit apartment building in Waukesha yesterday afternoon, leaving behind a charred structure and residents in shock. According to WISN, the Waukesha Fire Department received notification of the blaze near Mac Arthur Court and Kensington Drive at approximately 2:40 p.m., with first responders arriving on the scene within minutes to combat the rapidly spreading fire, the firefight was complicated by the wind which Assistant Chief Joseph Hoffman described, "Fire needs three things to be successful: heat, fuel and oxygen. And when you have the oxygen kind of being accelerated by the winds, it really causes for a very difficult fire fight for us."
Of the numerous first responders who converged on the emergency, nearly 100 firefighters from 20 different departments provided assistance yet despite their quick action and the extensive response, one firefighter sustained a minor injury due to "overexertion".. Dania Alcantar, a neighbor, voiced her concern in a statement obtained by WISN, saying, "I was praying to God that people were okay and hoping that no one was like hurt or anything." While all residents of the affected building were accounted for, unfortunately, one pet cat did not survive the incident.
FOX6 News reported that the community was left reeling from the severity of the fire with Kay Robinson, a resident of the area, expressing the shared sentiment, "Everyone was scared, everyone was worried," she said, "Just like, oh my god what is going on."
In a separate account, Brianna North narrated the intensity of the scene to TMJ4, "It’s just super shocking," stating, "It’s just another day and then you look over, see someone’s whole apartment on fire, and think that could be — that could be you."
Assistant Chief Hoffman underscored the building's lack of a sprinkler system given its age which may have contributed to the extent of the damage. In addition to the four units that were destroyed, others suffered from smoke and water damage, an estimated 30-plus individuals who called the building home and must now navigate the aftermath of this unexpected calamity.
