The National Weather Service in Sacramento forecasts cooler temperatures and stronger winds in Northern California today as a weather trough moves out. Gusts of up to 30 mph are expected, especially along the I-5 corridor. These winds, along with moderate humidity and recent rains, should help reduce fire weather concerns.

According to the National Weather Service, the first major rainfall of the Water Year is set to begin on Wednesday, bringing heavy rain and fresh snow to the mountains through Saturday. A developing low-pressure system will bring breezy southerly winds with gusts of 20-25 mph, and rainfall is expected to total between 0.25 and 2.50 inches.

As the week continues, rainfall will spread, and the northern Sierra may receive up to 12 inches of snow. Snow levels will be around 5,000 to 6,000 feet, dropping to near 5,000 feet late Friday into early Saturday. Travelers are advised to check conditions at quickmap.dot.ca.gov before heading into the mountains.

After the rain, an upper ridge from the Eastern Pacific will bring drier and warmer temperatures starting Sunday into early next week. Gusty north to east winds are expected until early Tuesday, and daily highs will be around seasonal averages or slightly lower.
