The California Highway Patrol's Golden Gate Division confirmed the seizure of 16 vehicles in a crackdown on illegal sideshow activities. These seizures were the result of a month-long investigation into two disruptive sideshows that had occurred on the Bay Bridge.
In the early hours of September 8, sideshow participants commandeered the bridge's westbound lanes, creating a spectacle that halted traffic flows and demanded local law enforcement's full attention. According to the CHP's social media post, officers struggled to reach the scene, trapped by the snarl their antics had created. A secondary incident unfurled hours later on the eastbound side, reflecting a troubling trend of such disturbances in the metropolitan area.
Implementing the Flock Safety camera systems was pivotal in the operation, offering investigators leads to identify 23 involved vehicles. Following a San Francisco County Judge's approval of seizure orders for all identified vehicles, 16 have been successfully confiscated, with the search for the remaining seven vehicles continuing. "Using our freeway systems as a place for these types of dangerous activities is unacceptable," said CHP Golden Gate Division Chief Don Goodbrand. The CHP's coordinated response included multiple divisions and had support from the San Pablo and Concord Police Departments.
The enforcement action aligns with Governor Newsom's focus on bolstering public safety in the East Bay and represents a collaborative effort spanning numerous jurisdictions and divisions of the CHP.
