Central Texas veterans are set to receive a substantial boost in resources as Governor Greg Abbott has announced over $8.2 million in grants awarded to local service organizations. The Texas Veterans Commission (TVC) is distributing these funds as part of their 'Grants Across Texas' initiative which has now made its ninth stop in the statewide presentations. More than 7,600 veterans and their families across 30 counties are expected to benefit from the services provided by these grants.
In a statement released by the Governor's official website, Governor Abbott paid tribute to the veterans, citing their "selflessly sacrificed for the freedoms we enjoy every day." He assured that Texas "will always honor and support our courageous veterans and their families." Evident in Central Texas, Mary Lopez Dale, TVC Vice Chair and Army veteran described the grants as proof of the region’s dedication to serving veterans through various crucial services such as programs for service dogs, Veteran Treatment Courts, and support for the homeless.
The grants list details a wide array of services to be funded, including $500,000 for home modifications through Easter Seals Central Texas, $255,000 for an Austin Dog Alliance service dog program, and multiple substantial awards for financial assistance, clinical counseling, and legal support via organizations like the Austin Bar Foundation, which received a $130,000 grant for pro bono legal services. The funding aims to tackle a spectrum of needs from the basic to the complex, ensuring a comprehensive network of support.
Drawing primarily on revenues from Texas Lottery Commission games earmarked for veteran support, the grants have been a lifeline for service members transitioning back into civilian life. Since the inception of these grant programs in 2009, over $313 million has been awarded, targeting nearly 41,000 veterans along with their dependents and surviving spouses, as noted in the Governor's announcement. Veterans seeking aid can find the list of organizations offering services in their area through the TVC's directory, while organizations looking to apply for future grants have a deadline of November 12, 2024.
