In an effort to spark early civic engagement among the youth, Chatham County Public Libraries are setting the stage for the Chatham Kids Voting Youth Elections. This non-partisan initiative is designed to offer children and teens under 18 an authentic voting experience, mirroring the real elections that their parents and guardians might be participating in around the same time.
Kids and teens can partake in the voting process at their local library branches, with the mock elections scheduled, to take place at multiple locations across Chatham County. As stated by the Chatham County announcement, the mock election results will be disclosed on November 8, the excitement of the democratic process can be a reality for these young participants, weeks before the grown-ups take to the polls.
The upcoming Chatham Kids Voting Youth Elections will make stops at the Chatham Community Library on October 28 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Wren Memorial Library on October 30 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., and will conclude at the Goldston Public Library on November 1, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. All events are free of charge and do not require registration, making it easy for families to walk in and participate in the educational offering.
As part of a broader campaign to educate and empower the youth, this program is presented by NC Cooperative Extension and 4-H Youth Development. Families with children and teens are particularly encouraged to attend, fostering a spirit of early involvement in local government and decision-making processes. In a society where the youth are often spectators, for the time being, initiatives like Kids Voting Chatham invest in the potential of younger generations, believing that they, too, can shape the future they will inherit.
