Today, Cleveland witnessed the commencement of a transformative project as the Cleveland Cavaliers, in partnership with the Cleveland Clinic and Bedrock Real Estate, broke ground on the new Cleveland Clinic Global Peak Performance Center. According to a statement obtained by the Cleveland Clinic's Newsroom, the facility represents a significant step in the $3.5 billion Cuyahoga Riverfront Master Plan. Promising to revitalize the downtown waterfront, the 210,000-square-foot complex, designed by Populous, will host many amenities geared towards elite athletes and the community at large.
Mayor Justin Bibb expressed surprise at the pace of development, stating, “I didn’t expect us to have shovels in the ground in less than three years,” as reported by News 5 Cleveland. The facility, poised to rise on the site of former parking lots, marks the commencement of vertical construction on the riverfront. This project is part of a larger vision that includes residential buildings, office towers, a hotel, various retail establishments, and extensive public space encompassing a riverwalk and a kayak launch area.
Aside from serving as the new practice venue for the Cavs, the center will also be a community-accessible sports medicine facility, providing various health services from sports medicine to cardiology, pulmonology, exercise physiology, neurology, nutrition, psychology, and genetics. Dr. Tom Mihaljevic, CEO and President of Cleveland Clinic, highlighted the dual focus of the center, telling News 5 Cleveland, “This center will serve not only elite athletes but also individuals from all walks of life, reflecting our shared commitment to health, innovation and community development.”
The project is an investment in sports and health and the city's economic and community growth. As a part of the Cavs Academy program, it aims to serve over 50,000 youth athletes throughout Northeast Ohio each year. The partnership between the Cavaliers and the Cleveland Clinic has also been extended for 25 years, making it one of the longest continuations between a sports organization and a medical provider. Cleveland19 News highlighted how leadership from both the Cavaliers and the Clinic view this partnership as a blend of sports science and wellness in a way that will position Cleveland as a central hub for health and sports excellence.
Bedrock Real Estate, driving the riverfront development, underlines its dedication to city-building strategies, with over $7.5 billion committed to acquiring and developing properties. Notably, the opening of the Cleveland Clinic Global Peak Performance Center is anticipated in 2027, marking a significant milestone in the city's evolution. Updates can be found on the Cavaliers website for those interested in following the center's progress.
