On the upcoming ballot, Coloradans face a decision on Proposition 131, an initiative that if passed, will introduce an all-candidate Primary Election and implement ranked-choice voting in General Elections. The proposition has encountered opposition from the Board of Douglas County Commissioners, as reported by Douglas County. In a recent vote, Commissioners George Teal and Lora Thomas rallied constituents to oppose the measure, expressing concerns over the dramatic overhaul it proposes to the state's electoral status quo.
The electoral landscape could shift from party-centered primaries to an all-inclusive primary where candidates from all parties can vie for votes from the entire electorate. However, Commissioner Teal foresees drawbacks, emphasizing simplicity in the current system. "Proposition 131 would add a lot of complexity that we don’t want," Teal stated. "We want to vote for who we want to vote for, and it’s the expectation that that individual will either win or lose. We don’t settle for anything less than the best. Ranked-choice voting runs contrary to the American mindset," according to Douglas County.
The general election changes would entail a ranking system, where voters prioritize their candidates, potentially leading to multiple rounds of counting if no contender achieves an immediate majority. Commissioner Thomas raised the issue of the questionable success of ranked-choice voting, as per Douglas County, "There is a lot of confusion around ranked-choice voting and what’s called ‘jungle primaries,'" she said. "There are 10 states that have already banned ranked-choice voting. It’s already failed in other places. Proposition 131 opposes the way we have voted for years. Changing it would not be a benefit to residents."
In contrast to his colleagues, Commissioner Abe Laydon holds a dissenting view, embracing Proposition 131. His affirmative stance represents a divide within the board, underscoring the complexity, and significance of the decision ahead for voters. Notably, Alaska has had a real-world application of a similar system, only to find itself reconsidering the move, potentially reverting to more conventional methods.
