In an ongoing effort to address the issue of unused prescription drugs, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is teaming up with state, and local law enforcement agencies for the National Drug Take Back Initiative. The event is set for Saturday, October 26 between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. This take-back day serves as an open invitation for individuals to safely dispose of unwanted or expired pharmaceuticals by turning them in at specified collection sites.
The DEA has highlighted that misuse and theft of prescription medications are persistent challenges, prompting such initiatives to mitigate the risks associated with these issues. In a drive earlier this year, according to the Plano Texas Police Department's Facebook post, almost 1,500 lbs of controlled substances were collected for disposal. The initiative emphasizes public health by aiming to curtail the number of unsecured drugs that could potentially lead to abuse or accidental poisoning.
Furthermore, the service is both free and anonymous, a factor that underlines the non-punitive nature of the campaign. Members of the community can bring their prescription and over-the-counter solid dosage medications, such as tablets and capsules; however, the program does not accept intravenous solutions, injectables, inhalers, or needles. Also excluded are illegal substances such as marijuana or methamphetamines.
For those in Plano, there are multiple drop-off points accommodated by the local police at different schools including Plano Senior High School at 2200 Independence Parkway, and Clark High School at 523 Spring Creek Parkway. Additional locations include Plano East Senior High School, Plano West Senior High School, and Bowman Middle School.
