In a move geared towards sustainability and local economic support, the city of Denver unveiled a new online Reuse Business Directory right ahead of International Repair Day. The initiative is focused on helping the community easily find and patronize businesses dedicated to repair, rental, and resale options. According to the City and County of Denver, the directory includes a variety of business categories like thrift shops, tool rental, and tailoring.
"Many Denverites are eager to embrace sustainable practices by repairing, renting, or buying used items, but they often struggle to find the right places to do so," Elizabeth Babcock, Executive Director of CASR, said as obtained by the City and County of Denver. By purchasing used items and repairing them, the community will now have a better chance to connect with shops nearby, whether to mend a cherished piece of clothing or to find an instrument for their child's school concert, thanks to the new directory.
Demonstrating its commitment to practical and user-friendly solutions, the directory allows Denver residents to search for specific items, ranging from furniture to electronics. Celebrating the communal act of repair and the reuse economy on Saturday, October 19, the directory is timed to underscore its value for both community engagement and ecological welfare.
The impact of Denver's reuse market on the local economy has been substantial, bringing in over $540 million last year and evidencing the directory's imperative. Employing over 3,000 people, these businesses played a key role in diminishing our carbon footprint, avoiding an estimated 223,700 MT CO2e in emissions, according to city reports.
