The borough of Dormont has closed all its playgrounds indefinitely, citing unanticipated safety concerns noted by its insurance provider. According to a WPXI report, local leaders took to social media and their community platforms to express their commitment to safety, noting that the playgrounds would remain shut down until necessary upgrades can be made to ensure the well-being of the community's children.
During an insurance renewal discussion, the borough was informed that their current insurance coverage for the playgrounds would not extend past January 1, 2025, prompting this immediate response, explained Borough Manager John Stinner. The insurance company has yet to specify the exact issues requiring attention. Still, the borough has organized for playground inspectors to provide thorough evaluations ahead of the borough council meeting scheduled for Monday evening, where more details will be disclosed, as reported by CBS News.
Residents expressed their worry and nostalgia about the potential long-term absence of these community staples "I have five nieces and nephews and we come here regularly. I love the sense of community that this brings. I am worried if this disappears it’s never going to be the same, which is so sad for our neighborhood," lamented Karie King, as per WPXI's coverage. In the quest for solutions, Stinner hinted that the borough had already secured grants and had plans to replace some of the playgrounds, including an estimate for a $1.2 million overhaul of the wooden park. Parents and community members desiring to participate in the ongoing discussions are welcome to attend the upcoming borough council meeting, which will be accessible virtually. CBS News provided this detail.
