As Hispanic Heritage Month unfolds, Dr. Matthew Gutierrez steps into the spotlight not just for his role as Del Valle ISD's first Latino superintendent but also for his vision and ambitious plans for the district. Gutierrez, whose career spans over two decades and includes a stint as Deputy Superintendent at Leander ISD, is intent on deeply connecting with his new school community. Dr. Gutierrez illustrated this commitment by taking the time to meet staff and speak with students about daily concerns—from cafeteria food to bell schedules, showcasing his dedication to listening and responsiveness, as reported by KVUE.
Dr. Gutierrez's arrival at Del Valle ISD is significant, given that 83% of the student body identifies as Latino. When learning of his pioneering position, he expressed surprise and pride in the potential to serve as a role model within the community, striving to ensure that every student receives a quality education. "I was surprised," Dr. Gutierrez told KVUE, adding, "I did not expect that. When I learned that I was going to be, I was proud."
With his credentials bolstered by a bachelor's degree from Angelo St. University, a master's degree from Schreiner University, and a doctorate from Texas Tech University, Dr. Gutierrez brings a rich background to the table. Before joining Del Valle ISD, his roles spanned from Superintendent at Seguin ISD, where he facilitated task forces and strategic planning, to Assistant Superintendent in Plano ISD, as noted by CBS Austin.
Understanding and empathy are cornerstone attributes of Dr. Gutierrez's leadership style. Growing up in poverty in rural Brady, he isn't just familiar with but truly knows the struggles many of his students face, such as not having air conditioning in summer or enough food in the refrigerator. "I understood what it was like to rely on extended family to provide support, food, basic necessities," he conveyed in an interview with KVUE.
