A chilling interruption unfolded at West High School in Torrance last Saturday when a blue Jeep SUV tore through the school's surrounding fence and came to a crashing halt on the track, alongside a youth soccer game. The incident took place around 2:00 P.M. near Entradero Avenue and Del Amo Boulevard, FOX LA reported. Surveillance footage from a home close to the scene captured the vehicle speeding down the street moments before the crash, followed by a daunt absence of control that led to the dire situation.
Immediately after becoming an unwelcome spectator on the track, the vehicle ignited, prompting witnesses to spring into action. One of the referees at the soccer match, Stephen Resnick, described the incident, saying, "I heard the crash and I turned around. I was at the other end of the field, which is some distance away. And I turned and I saw the car land on the track actually and it started to catch fire," according to ABC7. Resnick and other bystanders quickly pulled the driver from the car amidst the flames and held him until authorities arrived.
While the soccer game was abruptly interrupted, no players or attendees were harmed during the unlikely intrusion. The driver, however, was detained and taken to a local hospital. Details about his condition have not been disclosed. Witnesses observed what was described as "odd" behavior by the driver, and his legs were tied up before he was taken away on a stretcher, as reported by KTLA. Before this episode, there had been reports of the driver as a reckless driver in Hermosa Beach.
The Torrance Police Department has mentioned that the driver is a possible DUI suspect, ABC7 disclosed. The investigation is still ongoing, and thus far, no conclusive statements about drugs or alcohol involvement have been released.
