Early Tuesday morning, the Milwaukee Fire Department faced a blaze at a residence near 11th and Ring. According to CBS 58, the fire was reported at approximately 4:06 a.m. and involved an exterior fire that had reached the attic's eaves. Firefighters were met with the urgent task of rescuing eight individuals—two adults and six children—who were trapped on the second floor of the building.
As crews worked to control the blaze, they were able to enter and safely remove all occupants from the inside of the residence. Thankfully, in the wake of the fire, no injuries were reported by medical units on the scene, as described by FOX6 News.
Demonstrating the life-saving importance of having working smoke detectors and knowing fire safety practices, Milwaukee Fire Department Battalion Chief Joel Rechlitz stressed their significance. "Smoke detectors saved these individuals' lives, and they were working," Rechlitz highlighted in a statement obtained by WISN. He continued to detail vital survival tactics, mentioning that the occupants' decision to keep doors and windows closed helped prevent the fire's spread, thereby allowing for their eventual rescue.
It was the closing of windows and doors which helped to contain the fire and smoke, allowing the time for crews to carry out their rescue—which, had they opened the windows to scream for help, might have drawn the fire right to them, according to Rechlitz. As the Milwaukee Fire Department continues its investigation into the cause of the fire.
