Las Vegas is set to bid farewell to the Tropicana hotel, which has operated for nearly seven decades, with a scheduled implosion today at 2:30 a.m. As the city prepares for future development, many reflect on the memories created at the hotel.
According to KTNV, longtime visitor Debby Lamm reflects on the upcoming implosion with mixed emotions. "When I see the lot completely gone, it’s going to be sad, very sad," she said, recalling her many stays at the Tropicana, which holds personal significance for her, especially after the loss of her husband.
According to FOX5 Vegas, the demolition of the Tropicana will be carried out by Controlled Demolition Inc. and GGG Demolition. The Club Tower will use dynamite to collapse its concrete frame, while the Paradise Tower's steel structure will require a more precise approach using charged copper projectiles.
Mark Loizeaux, President & Owner of Controlled Demolition Inc., conveyed the immense planning that goes into such an undertaking. "You don’t have many of the really older iconic structures left, so I realize it’s special in the community. It’s really an honor to be a part of it," he told KTNV. Precautions have been extensive, with round-the-clock patrols in place to secure the explosive material already lodged within the buildings' structures.
With environmental considerations in mind, crews plan to recycle 95 percent of the Tropicana’s materials. Concrete will be repurposed for road pavements, and steel will be used for various projects. The implosion will start with the Paradise Tower falling away from Las Vegas Boulevard, followed by the Club Tower. The entire process is expected to take about 22 seconds, making way for the new A's baseball stadium, set to be completed by 2028.
