An Essex apartment complex was engulfed in flames just after midnight, leaving 18 residents without homes and injuring a firefighter. The fire at the Kings Mill Apartments and Townhomes was reportedly caused by an electrical strip on the first floor, according to Captain Len Stewart in a statement detailed by WMAR2 News. Responders found numerous residents, including children, hanging from windows awaiting rescue.
One individual made a harrowing decision to jump from a window. "The ground being wet and the grace of God," allowed the resident to escape physical harm, Stewart stated, as per WMAR2 News. The fire displaced 11 adults and seven children, though none suffered injuries. A firefighter was less fortunate, suffering a minor injury, and later evaluated at a local hospital. Fortunately, their condition is expected to be stable, indicating a hopeful prognosis.
Kings Mill Apartments has since temporarily provided vacant units to shelter the affected residents. Three apartments in the complex were declared uninhabitable, with an additional two sustaining significant smoke and water damage. The apartment managers also facilitated a unit for residents to seek warmth as the events unfolded, showcasing some semblance of community amidst calamity. At the same time, the Red Cross responded to further support the displaced individuals.
David Armstrong, a resident affected by the fire, recounted the situation's urgency in an interview with WBALTV, "We had to get out. At that point, the fire department was here. My niece had to climb through the window to get out." His account reflects the quick response of emergency services and the immediate action taken by the residents to ensure their safety during a difficult time.
