Drivers in Everett, your commute is about to change. Starting on Oct. 30, Mukilteo Boulevard will be closed for an estimated 12 months to allow for the replacement of the outdated Edgewater Creek Bridge. This structure, aged 78 years, is deemed no longer fit for purpose, carrying weight restrictions and an undesirable vulnerability to earthquake damage.
Commuters, cyclists, and foot travelers will need to start planning to possibly find alternate routes. The City is shutting down the stretch between Shore Avenue and Mukilteo Lane/LaMar Drive, as reported by the City of Everett.
While the inconvenience is clear, what stands out is the investment in safety and infrastructure that this move indicates. The project, with a budget of $34 million, relies predominantly on federal grant funding, signaling both the necessity and the support for robust civic improvements.
"We encourage anyone who travels frequently through the area to spend some time planning for alternate routes and plan extra time for their commutes," advised Dan Enrico, Everett Public Works principal engineer, according to the City of Everett. The city promises portable messaging signs to help alert and redirect traffic.
