The City of Raleigh’s Information Technology Department will host a Geographic Information Systems Day celebration on November 21 at Raleigh Union Station. The free event runs from 8:30 a.m. to noon and is open to all ages. Attendees can explore maps and spatial data through demos and hands-on activities, according to the City of Raleigh.

The day starts with remarks from City CIO Mark Wittenburg, but the main event may be the original map competition for students who want to draw new insights on the world. Students can submit their Geographic Information Systems-based maps until November 14. "All eligible maps will be displayed at Raleigh Union Station during the celebration on Thursday, Nov. 21," as stated by the City of Raleigh.

Geographic Information Systems Day shows that maps are still relevant and innovative. Organizations from across the state will showcase how Geographic Information Systems technology solves real-world problems. Attendees can learn from groups like the NC Department of Environmental Quality, Wake County Public Schools, Raleigh Stormwater, and others involved in Geographic Information Systems technology.

A key feature of Geographic Information Systems Day is the community element, where attendees can vote for their favorite map. "The winner will be the map that receives the highest number of votes from Geographic Information Systems Day attendees who will judge the quality, content, and creativity of the map," says the City of Raleigh.
