A bombshell interim report by the House Judiciary Committee's subcommittee on the weaponization of government alleges that Facebook executives suppressed stories related to Hunter Biden’s laptop to gain favor with the anticipated Biden-Harris administration. According to the House of Representatives, the FBI had warned major US tech companies of a potential document dump mirroring Russian disinformation tactics just before The Post’s stories on Hunter Biden's foreign business dealings were published in October 2020.
An unidentified Microsoft employee noted by the House of Representatives broke out that the story was the "[e]xact content expected for hack and leak," suggesting foresight into the event's occurrence. Internal Facebook communications revealed similarly dismissive attitudes. "Right on schedule,” one employee allegedly stated, and Facebook's then-vice president of global affairs, Nick Clegg, feared that, "our calls on this could colour [sic] the way an incoming Biden administration views us more than almost anything else...," as they discussed the handling of the information internally.
Further casting doubt on the tech platforms and the FBI's handling of the affair, social media employees were acutely aware of the optics concerning their influence on the election. One Facebook worker expressed, "[W]hen we get hauled up to [Capitol] [H]ill to testify on why we influenced the 2020 elections we can say we have been meeting for YEARS with USG [the US Government] to plan for it," as stated by the House of Representatives.
Controversy continues to swirl as members of the Republican Party, such as House Republican Conference Chairwoman Elise Stefanik, take to platforms like X to denounce "the FBI’s deep corruption regarding foreign election interference from Iran targeting President Trump." These latest revelations come at a particularly sensitive time as former President Donald Trump leads in polls ahead of the November 5 election.
