A 66-year-old Flint man, Clifford O'Neal Harvey, has been convicted on all counts in the murder of Carl Edward Jones, an incident stemming from a dispute over a woman. The Genesee County Prosecutor's Office confirmed the jury's decision, which found Harvey guilty of first-degree murder, among other charges. The deadly altercation occurred on February 18, 2023, and has been under investigation since then.
According to WNEM, evidence presented at the trial indicated that Harvey had planned to spend the weekend with his girlfriend at a motel, however, when she did not show, he and a friend undertook a search. They located her in a vehicle with Jones at the Riviera Party Shoppe, which led to a verbal confrontation, after which Harvey retrieved a handgun from his home. The encounter led to Harvey finding the pair again at Zerka's liquor store, where he shot Jones multiple times.
"This was a very unfortunate, unnecessary and tragic incident involving gun violence that took the life of one man and will put another man behind bars for the rest of his life," Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton said in a statement obtained by abc12. Video surveillance and dash cam footage were pivotal in corroborating the sequence of events leading to Jones' death.
Harvey's criminal history, which includes multiple felonious assaults, aggravated stalking, illegal entry, and gun charges, was noted by the prosecution during the trial. Subsequent to the murder conviction, Harvey now faces a mandatory life sentence without the possibility of parole, his sentencing is set for November 25, as Mid Michigan Now reported. Jones managed to fire at Harvey during the assault but missed; Harvey remained unscathed. With another life lost to gun violence, Flint residents reckon with the tragedy's ripple effects, resonating long after the crime tape is gone and the courtroom is emptied.
