Former Castroville Police Chief Christopher Filline, 58, was convicted on a federal wire fraud charge. The case dates back to 2016 and involved Filline orchestrating the destruction of his vehicle to defraud Farmers Insurance Group. He directed accomplices to set his vehicle on fire to simulate a theft and then falsely reported the incident to both the Lytle Police Department and the insurance company, according to KSAT.
The scheme proved temporarily lucrative, with KSAT detailing that Filline received $14,388.25 from Farmers Insurance Group; however, his underhanded tactics would eventually come under the scrutiny of authorities, leading to his indictment in 2020 and conviction this year. Investigations by the Bexar County Fire Marshal's Office, FBI, and Texas Department of Public Safety peeled back the layers of Filline's plot, uncovering his fraudulent activities and paving the way for justice to be served. A sentencing hearing now awaits him on January 22, 2025, where he faces a substantial penalty of up to 20 years in prison and a fine of $250,000.
MySanAntonio adds a layer of detail about Filline's methods; he utilized an accelerant to ensure the vehicle fire would be convincing enough to validate his theft claim.
