A former Detroit police officer, Dametri J. Wade, aged 26, has entered a guilty plea for making a false statement to Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agents, as per the announcements from the U.S. Attorney's Office. The false statement in question involved a larceny incident from 2022, where Wade was accused of providing cover for thieves using fraudulent documents to stage an eviction and commit theft. According to the The Detroit News, the guilty plea occurred in U.S. District Court yesterday.
Dametri J. Wade's sentencing is set for February 5, offering a potential maximum of five years in prison for the former police officer. Federal prosecutors detailed how Wade, while on duty in a police scout car, was present during the larceny on August 11, 2022, assisting in a ruse that resembled a court-authorized eviction. As per Detroit Free Press, Wade lied about his knowledge of the illegal activity to FBI agents during a December 19, 2022 interview, despite being fully aware of the theft.
"Lying to law enforcement is never acceptable, but for an officer sworn to uphold the law to do so is inexcusable," U.S. Attorney Dawn Ison said, as cited by WWJ Newsradio. Cheyvoryea Gibson, the FBI’s special agent in charge of the Detroit division, reinforced the notion that Wade's conduct failed to reflect the standards of the Detroit Police Department and highlighted the FBI's commitment to pursuing public corruption.
