A former priest with the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, Rodolfo Martinez-Guevara, entered a no contest plea to the felony charge of possession of child sexual abuse material (CSAM), including disturbing content depicting minors under the age of 12. The Ventura County District Attorney’s Office announced this development, noting Martinez-Guevara also admitted to several special allegations related to the volume and nature of the material in his possession, according to a news release from the District Attorney's Office.
Martinez-Guevara, formerly a member of the Missionaries of the Holy Spirit, was associated with multiple churches, including Our Lady of Guadalupe in Oxnard. His arrest and charges shocked the community, coming as a blow to the trust placed in him as a clergyman. District Attorney Erik Nasarenko stressed the severity of the betrayal, stating, "The defendant betrayed the law, and the trust placed in him as a religious leader," as reported by KTLA. Nasarenko emphasized the commitment of the Ventura County prosecutors to hold perpetrators accountable, irrespective of their social or religious stature.
The charges stemmed from an investigation that began with multiple reports to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Consequently, the Ventura County Child Exploitation & Human Trafficking Task Force took up their own investigation in April 2023, which led to Martinez-Guevara’s subsequent arrest on September 13, 2023. Investigators found him in direct possession of over 600 illicit images and videos.
Senior Deputy District Attorney Howard Wise remarked on the cooperation received from the Missionaries of the Holy Spirit, commenting, "I am grateful for the cooperation of the Missionaries of the Holy Spirit," indicating an institutional willingness to address the wrongs, per KTLA. Sentencing for the former priest is set for December 9.
