To enhance recycling efforts, Franklin County's SWACO has announced a notable expansion of its acceptable items list, which includes a specific type of plastic container. Beginning November 1, the clear plastic containers that once carried our fruits, salads, or morning eggs can now be set aside for recycling and other household items. According to the City of Hilliard's announcement, residents should ensure these containers are removed from any food or liquid and thoroughly dried before being tossed into the recycling bin. However, lids and labels can stay put.
Despite the positive change, lids on a container of grapes do not signify a shift toward more leniency across the board. Certain items remain on the list of non-recyclables for Franklin County's curbside and SWACO Drop-Off programs, non-clear plastic carryout containers, plastic bags, wrap or film, hazardous materials like batteries and propane tanks, cumbersome items like hoses and chains, and any foam products are still vetoed from recycling bins. Residents are urged to adhere to established recycling practices for paper and cardboard, plastic or aluminum cups, plastic bottles, tubs or jugs, glass bottles or jars, metal cans, and cartons, which are all still fair game for recycling.
This update, aimed at making recycling processes more efficient and environmentally friendly, emphasizes the importance of reducing contamination in the recycling stream. Hilliard officials remain hopeful that recycling rates will be markedly improved with clear instructions and ongoing community engagement. Such initiatives are part of a broader movement that acknowledges the critical role recycling plays in managing waste and conserving resources.
As we navigate the tides of change, the earth under our feet is firm with the resolve to protect her. The City of Hilliard and SWACO's joint effort stands as one small step among many in the journey toward sustainability. Residents are encouraged to participate in this collective endeavor to ensure that our environmental footprints leave impressions of care and consideration for future generations.
