In a significant crackdown on transnational crime, authorities have charged 16 individuals for their roles in a vast drug trafficking operation that spanned countries and resulted in multiple murders, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Central District of California announced. According to the office’s press release, the defendants, including a former Canadian Olympic snowboarder, orchestrated the shipping of large quantities of cocaine to Canada and had been involved in a series of violent acts to protect their enterprise.
Canadian citizens Ryan James Wedding and Andrew Clark, both residents of Mexico, are alleged to be the ringleaders, with Wedding still at large and Clark recently apprehended on October 8 by Mexican authorities. The extensive network purportedly navigated drug shipments through Colombia, Mexico, the United States, and into Canada, utilizing a distribution system spearheaded by Hardeep Ratte and Gurpreet Singh of Ontario, which specialized in harnessing long-haul semi-trucks for their operations. United States Attorney Martin Estrada revealed that "an Olympic athlete-turned-drug lord is now charged with leading a transnational organized crime group that engaged in cocaine trafficking and murder, including of innocent civilians," as stated by the U.S. Attorney's Office, Central District of California.
The superseding indictment unsealed implicates the group in several brutal acts of violence, among them the November 20, 2023 murders of two family members in Ontario, a punitive act for an intercepted drug shipment, and a surviving family member was left with severe injuries. Moreover, another murder was allegedly directed by Wedding and Clark on May 18, tied to a drug-related debt, and they were additionally charged alongside Malik Damion Cunningham for murder in Ontario on April 1. In a joint effort to curb the organization's reach, the FBI worked with multiple agencies including the DEA, LAPD, and the RCMP, with FBI's Assistant Director in Charge Akil Davis stating, "Today, in collaboration with several local, federal, and international partners, we reaffirm our commitment to the American people by dismantling a violent organized crime network trafficking large quantities of drugs into the United States and orchestrating multiple homicides to eliminate the competition."
While the case continues to unfold, the defendants are expected to soon make court appearances in various locations including Los Angeles, Michigan, and Miami, as detailed by the U.S. Attorney's Office, Central District of California. Assistant United States Attorneys Lyndsi Allsop and Maria Jhai from the Violent and Organized Crime Section, along with Ryan Waters from the Asset Forfeiture and Recovery Section, are leading the prosecution of this case. Significant support was also provided by the Justice Department’s Office of International Affairs.
