Fort Collins residents interested in making an impact on their city's future have a prime opportunity to get involved. The City of Fort Collins is holding an open house on Nov. 7 for those who wish to learn about volunteering on City boards and commissions. The event, which is slated to run from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at Fort Collins City Hall, located at 300 Laporte Ave., will provide attendees with an insight into the various boards and commissions and, the volunteer roles available.

According to the City of Fort Collins, Fort Collins operates 23 boards and commissions focusing on a range of topics from transportation, and affordable housing, to water and energy. Davina Lau, the city's Public Engagement Specialist, highlighted the value of these groups, stating, "Boards and commissions are a fantastic way for residents to help shape their community, and impact their local government." Lau's remarks emphasize the importance of civic participation and the direct influence residents can have on the governance of their city.

The structure of these bodies allows for community members to step into advisory or decision-making roles. While boards are tasked with studying information and making recommendations to the City Council, commissions are endowed with the authority to make decisions within their specialized fields such as building review or historic preservation. This diverse range of boards and commissions provides numerous channels for community members to contribute their expertise and perspectives.

Looking ahead, nearly all boards and commissions will be seeking new members in 2025, and applications will be accepted from Dec. 1, through Jan. 10, 2025. Interested parties can apply for up to three boards or commissions, and, if selected, they will be appointed to serve on one. Depending on the specific board or commission, volunteers can sign up for two-year or four-year terms. One requirement for all applicants is that they must reside within the Fort Collins Growth Management Area throughout their tenure on the board or commission.
