Continuing his tenure of service and oversight, Governor Greg Abbott has announced the reappointment of Tom Sellers as the chair of the Texas State Cemetery Committee, a decision set to extend his leadership role for another two-year term. This committee, tasked with the upkeep and management of the hallowed Texas State Cemetery, operates in concert with the State Preservation Board, ensuring that the final resting place of many of the state's notable figures maintains its dignity and respect.
The committee chair, Tom Sellers, comes to the position with a wealth of experience. After retiring from a substantial 40-year career at ConocoPhillips, Sellers has not shied away from community and leadership roles. His resume includes positions indicating a sustained commitment to various organizations, from the cultural like the Austin Symphony Orchestra, to legal and business communities, seen in the State Bar of Texas and the Texas Oil and Gas Association, amongst others. As reported by the Office of the Governor, Sellers "is a member of the State Bar of Texas and the Leadership Austin Class of 2003."
Educationally, Sellers's background is both business and law-oriented, with a Bachelor of Business Administration from The University of Texas at Austin and a Juris Doctor from South Texas College of Law. Such academic credentials, alongside his professional history, fortify his qualifications for steering the Committee's operations. "Sellers received a Bachelor of Business Administration in Petroleum Land Management from The University of Texas at Austin and a Juris Doctor from South Texas College of Law," affirmed the Office of the Governor's announcement.
With his reappointment, Sellers will continue to mold the future of the Texas State Cemetery, a sanctuary of heritage and history. The leadership role demands an attentiveness to both preservation and modern governance, challenges Sellers appears well-equipped to navigate, having juggled similar responsibilities in his many, diverse roles. His previous tenure as chair has evidently satisfied Governor Abbott, who has entrusted Sellers with the ongoing stewardship of one of Texas's most sacred spaces. "Sellers is also the governance chair for the Austin Symphony Orchestra Board of Trustees Executive Committee," as noted by the Office of the Governor, underscoring his expertise in organizational oversight.
