Ohio's initiative to foster childhood literacy took a physical shape by introducing new "reading spaces" at several Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program clinics across the state. As the Mike DeWine Governor of Ohio's website reported, Governor Mike DeWine and First Lady Fran DeWine celebrated this development by hosting book readings in two locations. The pair engaged with the young attendees at the Butler County WIC Office in Hamilton and the Portage/Columbiana County WIC Office in Lisbon.

The reading spaces, developed by Mike DeWine, Governor of Ohio, Department of Health, in collaboration with Dolly Parton's Imagination Library of Ohio, provide inviting areas where children can delve into books while their families attend the clinic. According to Governor DeWine, "Books open up a world of possibilities for our children." He further emphasized these spaces' role in supporting the intellectual growth of Ohio's youth, building a foundation for success in early education. With designs inspired by the children's book "The Very Hungry Caterpillar," these spaces aim to nurture a love for reading in an immersive and visually appealing environment.

First Lady Fran DeWine expressed delight in sharing stories with the children and expressed optimism that the new reading nooks would become popular among clinic visitors. She said we are hopeful that these designated reading spaces will become quite popular with visitors. In support, the First Couple encouraged more families to sign their children up for the Imagination Library's monthly book delivery service—this resource mailing over 410,000 Ohio children free, age-appropriate books.

With early literacy indicators of future academic success, adding these spaces is part of Ohio's more significant intent to make reading materials more accessible to young children. Each location is selected based on several criteria, including literacy data and the proximity of library resources, ensuring that families in need have the maximum benefit. Furthermore, the sites are equipped with QR codes, enabling parents to easily register their children for the Imagination Library directly from their smartphones. "We are excited to be able to collaborate on this project to benefit Ohio infants and young children across the state," according to Mike DeWine, Governor of Ohio's website. ODH Director Bruce Vanderhoff, MD, MBA, acknowledged the initiative's potential to elevate literacy levels statewide.

This literacy project extends beyond the selected WIC clinics with reading spaces. It is statewide, with all Ohio WIC clinics able to assist in enrolling children in the Imagination Library program. The WIC program serves a considerable slice of the state's population, with more than 135,000 infants and children benefiting each month. These efforts by state leaders align with the larger objective of ensuring kindergarteners and young learners are prepared and primed for a lifetime of educational achievements.
