In the wake of a fire that engulfed the Chabad of Greater Orlando, the local Jewish community has shown resilience and unity, assembling at a temporary location to observe Rosh Hashanah. According to WFTV, Rabbi Dovid Dubov expressed gratitude for the availability of a meeting space in a nearby hotel in Winter Park that the community used for four days to celebrate the holiday. The necessity of such a place came into sharp focus following last week's devastating electrical fire that left their worship center in ruin.
Rosh Hashanah, a significant time for reflection and renewal for the Jewish community, has taken on a deeper meaning against the backdrop of loss, something Rabbi Shalom Dubov reflected on during the celebration. "Everything that happens is not a coincidence. It happens because God wants it to happen," Rabbi Dubov stated, as Fox35Orlando reported, emphasizing the community's steadfast belief in purpose even through calamity. Despite having plans to celebrate at the hotel and worship at various locations for the time being, the congregation is looking forward, with discussions ongoing regarding a permanent home for the Chabad.
In a poignant appeal amidst the crisis, Rabbi Sholom Dubov reached beyond the immediate community, hoping for global tranquility. "We pray that not only is there peace in our land, which is the land of Isreal, but really the entire world. We’re not just praying for Jewish people, we’re praying for humanity," Rabbi Dubov stated in an interview with WFTV. This sentiment comes amidst heightened tensions as news broke of Iran launching a missile strike earlier in the week.
Though Chabad faces restructuring after the destruction, important religious items, including all Torahs, have been salvaged. Rabbi Dubov confirmed that the fire, which originated on the roof, has been attributed to an electrical issue.
