North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey announced the arrest of Blair Terell Lofton, a 29-year-old man from Greensboro, as part of a crackdown on insurance fraud. Lofton faces charges of insurance fraud and obtaining property by false pretense, both of which are felonies, according to a press release from the North Carolina Department of Insurance.

Special agents with the Department's Criminal Investigations Division report that Lofton allegedly tried to defraud Integon Indemnity Corporation out of $13,120 in lost wages. He reportedly submitted a false wage verification form claiming employment at AML Ventures during a time that did not match the period of a motor vehicle accident. The accident occurred on November 4, 2022, while Lofton's actual employment at AML was in 2018, as reported by the North Carolina Department of Insurance.

Blair Terell Lofton was arrested in Mecklenburg County on Oct. 27 and released on a secured $5,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in Guilford County Court on Nov. 12, where the details of his alleged insurance fraud could be further explored. Commissioner Mike Causey stated that "insurance fraud hits consumers in the wallet," and that false claims raise costs for all policyholders. It is estimated that "approximately 20 cents of every insurance premium dollar" goes toward covering fraud costs. The North Carolina Department of Insurance encourages anyone with information about insurance fraud or white-collar crimes to report it anonymously to help address these issues.
