Hilliard residents are set to navigate smoothly the city's newest roundabout, which has just swung open at Cosgray and Scioto Darby roads. The city's 19th roundabout aims to streamline traffic flow and bolster pedestrian safety. The City of Hilliard's official announcement reported that the traffic circle became partially operational last Thursday, but the south leg will temporarily re-close for further construction.
Despite this milestone, drivers should be aware that some lanes will remain obstructed by traffic barrels to prevent accidentally venturing into the unfinished southbound street. The Cosgray Road extension is on track to fully open by November's end. It was purpose-built to service the emergent Hilliard Recreation and Wellness Campus, dubbed The Well. This multi-lane hybrid roundabout has been designed to handle the current traffic and accommodate expectantly more lanes for the anticipated future growth of the suburban landscape.
Motorists can expect several features to aid them in their commute. These improvements, which are still forthcoming, include overhead lane control signs that will guide drivers in lane selection. The approaches on the westbound and southbound sides will have designated lanes for left turns, through lanes, and right turns. Letty Schamp, City of Hilliard Transportation and Mobility Director, says it's all about keeping traffic moving. Raised crosswalks have also been installed to temper vehicle speeds and heighten safety for those on foot or riding bicycles across.
The roundabout's design boasts "spirals" and clearly defined pavement markings to guide drivers directly from their entry lane to the appropriate exit. In a push further to connect communities, later this fall, flashing beacons will mark new crosswalks, providing safer passage for pedestrians and cyclists to the various trails within The Well campus and the Darby Town Center businesses. According to the City of Hilliard, "We are excited to get one step closer to delivering this project to the residents of Hilliard,” beamed Schamp, stressing the combined benefits of enhanced vehicular throughput and improved safety. The Well's opening itself, however, is slated for the next summer season in 2025.
