Ellicott City natives and visitors should prepare for an early morning road closure scheduled for the historic return of the Firehouse Museum's cupola and bell. According to an announcement by Howard County, the complex operation will occur tomorrow from midnight to 4 a.m. To safely carry out the task, the county will shut down Church Road, between Emory Street and Main Street, to all traffic. Main Street will also face brief closures between Old Columbia Pike and Court Avenue to accommodate the necessary crane movements for the installation. Motorists should expect restrictions and plan accordingly.
Parking will be restricted in the area, and county officials are urging drivers to remain vigilant during the closure. Activities will include coordinated efforts by BGE crews to manage crane operations, with explicit assurances that power outages or service interruptions should not occur.
The dome and bell have been absent since early April, having been removed to allow for structural renovations to the museum. The museum remains closed, with ongoing renovations for completion in spring 2025. Residents looking forward to the museum's reopening will have to wait a little longer, as the careful reconstruction promises to pay homage to Ellicott City's storied past.
