The historic Tower Theatre in Houston's Montrose neighborhood, which has transitioned through various embodiments from a movie theater to a performance venue and a club, now readies itself for a new chapter as a jazz club and restaurant, courtesy of San Antonio musician Brent "Doc" Watkins. Watkins' endeavor, which follows on the success of his San Antonio venue, Jazz, TX, is part of a larger redevelopment project by Radom Capital, aiming to transform the iconic theater and its adjacent plaza into a vibrant cultural hotspot, as reported by the Houston Chronicle.
The unnamed project, a partnership between Watkins' Round Midnight Entertainment and Radom Capital, expects to debut in the summer of 2025 featuring up to 300 seats and a live music lineup that boasts a broad array of musical genres while Brent “Doc” Watkins, a jazz aficionado and businessman, is confident that the Houston incarnation will echo the charm of 1930s supper clubs, providing an ambience where patrons can indulge in steak, pasta, and various appetizers paired with a variety of cocktails and wines all while savoring eclectic live performances Watkins himself is eager to bring the concept to life specifically in the Montrose area, citing the neighborhood's dynamic spirit as a prime part of the old Tower Theatre building's intrigue in a statement obtained by the Houston Business Journal.
The Tower Theatre building, situated at 1201 Westheimer Road, will retain its recognizable marquee but will undergo extensive interior modernizations, Watkins, who founded Jazz, TX in 2016 within the historic Pearl Brewery’s Bottling Department building, plans to restore the Tower Theatre's former luster and generate a cultural nexus where Houston's vibrant culture and live jazz can intersect; alongside maintaining Mala Sichuan Bistro as a long-time tenant, Radom Capital's redevelopment plans also include integrating other recreational spaces that reflect the unique character of Montrose, which have been recently confirmed through a Radom Capital announcement regarding the addition of a new Nando’s Peri Peri location.
These forthcoming enhancements to the Montrose area are but a fraction of Radom Capital's overarching 1111 Westheimer project, which will see upgrades across several properties, including facade improvements and the creation of a more cohesive retail experience, enhanced connectivity between locales is envisioned via upgraded facades, additional landscaping, and hardscaping aimed at crafting an environment where various retail spaces and dining options can thrive alongside the anticipated jazz and dining experience Radom Capital's vision for revitalization extends to the transformation of additional properties at 3224 Yokum Drive and 3230 Yokum, with particular attention to façade replacements and the establishment of new patios, further enriching the community's tapestry.
