In a somber ruling that brings a small measure of justice in a harrowing case of child abuse, Luis Luna, 27, has been given a life sentence without the possibility of parole for the 2020 murder and sexual assault of his infant daughter, Savayah Mason. The conviction came after a 10-day trial in Houston, ending in one of the most unsettling cases the Harris County District Attorney's Office has managed in recent years.
"This baby couldn’t walk or talk, and she should have been with someone who kept her safe, but instead he abused that trust," District Attorney Kim Ogg said in a statement obtained by the Harris County DA's website. The prosecutors working in the Child Fatality Section of the DA’s Office, which includes Assistant District Attorney Edward A. Appelbaum and ADA Sara Delgado, specifically focus on perpetrators who target the most vulnerable, striving to prevent them from evading responsibility for their actions.
Responders were called to Luna's home in the Alief area on August 24, 2020, after it was reported that the eight-month-old had stopped breathing. Despite emergency efforts, the child was declared dead at an area hospital, with autopsy reports later revealing suffocation as the cause of death. Further investigation provided disturbing evidence of ligature marks and indications of sexual assault. The specifics of the crime outlined in the trial painted a horrifying picture of betrayal and violence.
"What this defendant did was one of the most horrific acts of violence imaginable — it’s the worst kind of evil in the world," Chief Assistant District Attorney Edward A. Appelbaum said, as reported on the Harris County DA's website. The reaction from the judicial system in this case signals a clear objective: to see that justice is served in even the most unspeakable of crimes, particularly those crimes committed against children — society’s most defenseless.
The irreversible sentence handed to Luna ensures he will spend the remainder of his life incarcerated, with the presiding judge and jury affirming there is no place in society for individuals capable of such monstrous acts.
