Evacuation and concern gripped the area around the 5700 block of Westheimer last night as both the Houston Police Department and a bomb squad were summoned to address the threat posed by a suspicious package. The package, reported at around 7 p.m., led to the clearing of the building housing the Saudi Consulate as well as the offices of television station KHOU. In a statement obtained by FOX 26 Houston, HPD has since declared the building safe, yet they've released few details on the incident.
A Houston police spokesperson told The Houston Chronicle that the evacuation was a precautionary measure, confirming that the bomb squad was deployed despite there being no immediate belief of a threat to public safety. Len Cannon, an evening news anchor, revealed to the public from his building evacuated, "The building was evacuated because of reports, according to HPD, of a suspicious package on one of the floors."
Officials have maintained that no threats had been directed at anyone, a point echoed by both news agencies reporting on the incident. Details surrounding the suspicious package itself remain scant, with authorities yet to provide information on its contents or origin.
In the wake of the evacuation, Cannon and his fellow KHOU employees found themselves abruptly displaced, managing to continue their broadcast duties from a relocated facility located downtown. "Don't have much more detail than that, but we'll keep you updated," Cannon posted, as per The Houston Chronicle.
