To celebrate the achievements of local businesses and individuals championing disability inclusion, Howard County has named its Employment Award winners for 2024, marking National Disability Employment Awareness Month. The commendable initiative, spearheaded by Howard County Executive Calvin Ball in collaboration with the Howard County Commission on Disabilities (CoD), recognized those who have advanced equal opportunities for individuals with disabilities through commendable employment practices.
During the event hosted at the Maryland Innovation Center, Ball acknowledged the winners, stating, "We recognize the value that an inclusive, diverse workforce brings to our business community and county. Employment is empowering, and it is through the removal of economic and other societal barriers that we can expand opportunity. This year’s winners have stepped up to the plate and taken the initiative to advance the employment of people with disabilities," in a statement cited by Howard County's official website.
This year’s top honors went to Chuck Chandler, the general manager at Residence Inn Fulton, who has been instrumental in creating a supportive environment and training opportunities for students with disabilities. Similarly, the Giant at Hickory Ridge Store #111 was celebrated for its commitment to an inclusive hiring process and accommodations, thereby fostering equal opportunities for all employees.
Second-place commendations were presented to Michael Touchet, owner of the Touche´ Touchet Louisiana Café in Elkridge, who, aside from championing a welcoming work culture, offers unique training opportunities to develop important industry skills for students transitioning into the workforce. Following closely, the runner-ups included the online retail jewelry business Hope Love Shine, which employs participants from the Autism Hiring Program, and Lib’s Grill at Maple Lawn, each praised for their staff training and inclusive employment strategies as detailed by Howard County's official website.
Every October, National Disability Employment Awareness Month highlights the valuable contributions of employees with disabilities and emphasizes the need for equal access to quality jobs. This year's theme, "Access to Good Jobs for All," aligns with Howard County's efforts to honor those making progress in this area, reinforcing America's dedication to workplace diversity and inclusion.
