Intel, the semiconductor giant facing a torrid year, is moving forward with sizable job cuts including the termination of 251 personnel in Austin. The layoffs are part of a broader initiative to streamline operations, which will see close to 15,000 positions slashed worldwide — a contraction of roughly 15% of Intel's workforce, as per a statement the company made to KVUE.

Details of the Austin job cuts surfaced in a Texas Workforce Commission WARN Notice, citing the actions are set to commence on November 15. Intel, which for decades led the U.S. chip industry, has been losing ground to competitors such as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, and Nvidia. The latter has seen its stock surge on the S&P 500 this year, while Intel watched its valuation sink by more than half since January, according to a report by MySA.

Communicating the rationale behind the cutbacks, an Intel spokesperson conveyed the difficulty inherent in such decisions. “These are the most difficult decisions we ever make, and we are treating people with care and respect,” said Addy Burr, alluding to the intended care for affected employees, MySA reported. The aim, as described, is to reshape Intel into a more nimble entity better positioned for enduring growth.

This development marks yet another tick on a timeline of challenges for Intel, which earlier this year encountered its most severe decline on Wall Street in decades. The once dominant player in the chip sector has found it hard to regain its footing in a rapidly evolving market. Meanwhile, morale among remaining staff is often a collateral concern in the wake of layoffs, one which Intel must navigate as it endeavors to realign its strategy.
