The labor dispute at the Washington County Housing Authority ended with union workers agreeing on a new contract, effectively ending a four-day strike that left various housing facility residences without immediate maintenance and clerical support. According to a statement detailed by WPXI, the Teamsters Union Local 585, representing the 32 maintenance and clerical workers, resumed negotiations that culminated in a settlement leading to a return to work Monday.
During the strike, residents of the 17 facilities managed by the authority found themselves in a bind, unable to reach anyone for services or inquiries for repairs connected to Section 8 housing. Then, on Friday, a resolution was suddenly reached. Teamsters and the housing authority announced the joint statement, underscoring that the accord ended the strike and introduced "well-deserved wage increases" for the dedicated maintenance and clerical staff. Observer-Reporter details that the agreement came somewhat unexpectedly after state-sanctioned mediation sessions that began just days after the strike commenced.
The labor clash saw Teamsters members picketing at strategic points, including the authority’s headquarters at Crumrine Tower, and it was speculated negotiations would languish until the following week. However, the reconciliation materialized swiftly, underlying the urgency felt on both sides to maintain the necessities and comforts of the communities they serve.
The new agreement, not fully disclosed yet, includes moderate wage increases that will cost the authority an extra $36,567 over three years. This is a small amount compared to the essential services the workers provide to around 1,100 apartment units in the county. Harold Close, the local union’s leader, expressed satisfaction, as per Observer-Reporter, saying, "It was resolved pretty quickly," but advised the public to check the joint statement for more details. The deal will relieve the striking workers and those relying on their services, as the maintenance workers will return to work at 12:01 a.m. on Monday.
