For those curious about the inner workings of local law enforcement in Lakewood, there is now an opportunity to gain first-hand insight. The Lakewood Police Department is opening its doors for the 2025 Citizens’ Police Academy, a program spanning 12 weeks designed to educate residents and local workers on the functions and responsibilities of their police force. Commencing on January 15, 2025, the academy invites participants to engage each Wednesday evening from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., sharing in discussions and interactive activities centered on various aspects of policing.
A unique aspect of the program allows participants to arrange a ride-along with a patrol officer, providing a glimpse into the day-to-day experiences of Lakewood's law enforcement. However, those aspiring to join the academy must meet specific criteria, including being at least 21 years old, living or working in Lakewood, having a relatively clean driving record with no more than six points against it, and having a history clear of felony or serious misdemeanor convictions.
According to the City of Lakewood's official announcement, applicants should note that class sizes are limited, and admission will be contingent upon passing a background check. The no-cost educational experience is not just about imparting knowledge. Still, it is also envisioned as a community-building exercise—an effort to foster understanding and collaboration between the police department and the community it serves.
For those interested in enrolling, the Lakewood Police Department has set a deadline for applications on December 13 or until the class reaches total capacity. Queries about the academy can be directed via email to [email protected] or by calling Officer Ortiz at (216) 701-3063.
