A recent judgment in Larimer County has placed a local man behind bars for his crimes against children. Luis Son Gonon, caught last year during an operation to apprehend child predators, has received a five-year sentence in prison as reported by Larimer County Sheriff's Office. Arrested at 27, Gonon was ensnared by undercover agents when he thought he was conversing with a 14-year-old girl online and arranged a meeting at a local hotel.
In the operation conducted by the combined efforts of the Larimer County Sheriff's Office and Johnstown Police Department, multiple charges were laid against Gonon including Soliciting a Child Prostitute and Attempted Sexual Assault on a Child. Following his arrest, he was held at the Larimer County Jail agreeing to a cash bond of $1,000. The trial concluded in July of this year with Gonon pleading not guilty, however, a jury convicted him of Soliciting a Child Prostitute.
Sentencing took place last month where both the District Attorney and Defense Council suggested Sex Offender Intensive Supervised Probation as a part of his punishment. Yet, it was the presiding Judge Daniel McDonald who decided a prison sentence was necessary. "We will not tolerate child predators in Larimer County," Larimer County Sheriff John Feyen said, as obtained by Larimer County Sheriff's Office, emphasizing the gravity of the crimes committed and the importance of protecting vulnerable members of the community.
Being accused of crimes that could have escalated into further harm against children, Sheriff Feyen expressed his dissatisfaction with the earlier proposal of probation for such a serious offender, as per the Larimer County Sheriff's Office. His concerns underscore the ongoing struggle to balance rehabilitation and punishment in cases involving sexual offenses against minors. Judge McDonald's decision, in this case, reflects a commitment to safeguarding children from potential future offenses by Gonon.
