Las Cruces' unhoused community is facing a new development as the Las Cruces Police Department (LCPD) gears up for enforcement of the Shopping Cart Ordinance, which is set to take effect on October 16. To provide support, LCPD has established a temporary storage option for those who may find themselves without a means to secure their personal belongings. A large shipping container, complete with shelving, has been placed on police premises, offering a weatherproof space for items previously carted around in shopping carts.
According to the City of Las Cruces, this service comes without charge for the unhoused. Accessible on specified days and times, this offering has some limitations. Notably, stored items must not exceed a weight of 35 pounds and are restricted in nature, perishables, liquids, medications, currency, flammables, and potentially dangerous items like firearms or sharp objects are prohibited. This policy leaves room for essential personal items to be kept safe and dry.
For those interested, the department's Records window on Picacho Avenue will serve as the drop-off and pick-up point on Tuesdays and Thursdays, except holidays, between the hours of 8-11 a.m. and 1-5 p.m. It's been made clear by the city that all items will undergo a search before being accepted for storage.
The new Shopping Cart Ordinance was passed by the City Council last August 5 this year and marks an effort to address concerns surrounding public nuisance and safety hazards associated with shopping carts taken from retail establishments.
