On the morning of last Thursday, officers from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department received reports of a vehicle with stolen plates at the intersection of Nellis Boulevard and Tropicana Avenue. According to a press release from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, officers located the white Honda at a gas station, with an aerial unit observing a woman sitting inside.
Jose Contreras-Munguia, 25, appeared shortly after, entering the car and abruptly driving away as the police attempted to apprehend him. In an effort to safely manage the unfolding situation, the aerial unit assisted ground officers to quickly locate the suspects after they had entered a nearby apartment complex. Despite the risk, Officer Richards courageously ran to confront Contreras-Munguia, who was attempting to enter a locked door to the complex's management office, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department press release explained.
The confrontation escalated when Contreras-Munguia reportedly pointed a gun at Officer Richards, prompting the officer to discharge his firearm, striking the suspect. Teams of officers then detained Contreras-Munguia, providing him with aid before medical personnel transported him to Sunrise Hospital. Alongside Attempted Murder on a First Responder, Contreras-Munguia faces a series of charges including Resisting a Public Officer with a Firearm and Possession of Stolen Property-Firearm. He was booked in absentia at the Clark County Detention Center.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department statement emphasized that a "Critical Incident Review Team" is to conduct an in-depth examination of the incident, focusing on the departmental policies and training connected with the use of force exercised during the encounter. A video detailing the briefing was made available for the public to ensure a transparent dissemination of facts surrounding the incident, with the release further noting that more details would be forthcoming as the situation is carefully reviewed.
