In a substantive push to curb the escalating threat of impaired driving in Los Angeles County, a $1.7 million grant has been bestowed upon the District Attorney's Office, aimed at bolstering DUI training and prosecution efforts. District Attorney George Gascón articulated the impact of such funding, "The devastation caused by impaired driving reverberates through families, communities, and our justice system," as stated by the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office.

This fiscal shot in the arm, courtesy of the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration channels financial support into the DUI Training and Prosecution Section (DTAPS), in response to the troubling uptick in DUI incidents and associated fatalities. The grant facilitates enhanced training instruments, working closely with law enforcement and boosting the ranks of certified drug recognition experts (DREs), experts who are crucial in the courtroom to explicate the impairment effects of various substances, and their testimony is invaluable to the cause, as per the District Attorney's Office. Since its inception in 2016, DTAPS has been at the vanguard of training initiatives for personnel tackling alcohol and drug-related offenses.

With this grant in effect until September 2025, the Office of Traffic Safety has agreed to partially fund a DRE who will serve within DTAPS and be made available to all deputy district attorneys for DUI-related issues, this is an acknowledgment of the integral role these experts play in the justice system's handling of such cases. The decision underscores the collective commitment to advancing the proficiency with which Los Angeles tackles the challenges presented by impaired driving, this commitment is encapsulated in the words of District Attorney Gascón as he reaffirms the broader objective beyond prosecution: "work toward preventing future tragedies," the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office noted.
