Los Angeles firefighters responded to a significant blaze at a single-story commercial building in South Park today. The Los Angeles Fire Department reported heavy smoke billowing from the vacant property at 449 E 55th St at approximately 12:23 PM. LAFD's initial alert described the edifice as roughly 50 feet by 300 feet in size.
The situation quickly escalated, prompting the deployment of two additional task forces, raising the incident to Greater Alarm status. Not to fall behind, firefighters shifted to defensive tactics, including the need to forcibly cut into rolling steel doors to enable hose line access. "Initial reports of large amounts of rubber burning inside" suggested that the fire might be especially challenging to extinguish, as per the LAFD follow-up notification.
Despite the initial hurdles, the fire was brought under control within 34 minutes. In total, 66 firefighters were involved in combatting the flames. The LAFD confirmed that there were no injuries associated with the incident. However, persistent heavy smoke was reported as firefighters set up to blow out the smoke and embark on required overhaul operations, according to an LAFD announcement.
