In a push to tackle the critical issue of homelessness in the city, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass is leading operations that have recently transitioned numerous unsheltered residents into housing, notably from encampments sprawled across areas near the Ramón C. Cortines School of Visual and Performing Arts in Downtown Los Angeles and another in Van Nuys close to the local airport and golf course. Images and video clips of the operations are accessible, as detailed by the Office of the Mayor.
This week's actions are a continuation of the "Inside Safe" initiative, a plan aimed at not only providing shelter but also connecting the homeless with supportive services. It is part of a broader effort directed by Mayor Bass since her first day in office, which began with declaring an emergency on the homelessness crisis. "These efforts brought unhoused Angelenos inside and restored community space for students and businesses," Mayor Bass said, as stated by the Office of the Mayor.
Councilmember Eunisses Hernandez also backed the operation, stating "This week's Inside Safe proves again that a Housing First approach is the solution to our homelessness crisis". Hernandez expressed gratitude towards Mayor Bass for her resolved leadership in addressing the issue. In addition, Councilmember Imelda Padilla, representing the area of Van Nuys, highlighted the success of the operation which "exemplifies the power of collaboration between city and county partners" and emphasized the ongoing commitment to work with the mayor.
