Macomb County's financial landscape faces an impending change as Steve Smigiel, the county's long-standing Finance Director, gears up for retirement in early 2025. Smigiel, who has been at the financial helm for over three decades, is credited with strengthening the county's economic status, maintaining a stalwart AA+ bond rating and instilling a culture of fiscal rigour.
"I’ve known Steve for years and his leadership and financial expertise have been invaluable to Macomb County," Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel shared in a recent announcement. Smigiel's transition plan involves staying on board until his replacement is not only found, but also comfortably settled into a deputy position.
During his tenure, Smigiel has been the chief architect behind several economic achievements, from the practical drafting of balanced budgets to forward-thinking strategies like funding the Central Intake and Assessment Center without putting additional strain on taxpayers. "The past 34 years have been incredibly rewarding," Smigiel expressed in a statement. His confidence in the county's ability to continue its financial prosperity under the new direction reflects his own dedication to meticulous planning, as per the county's announcement. Macomb County's objective is to achieve a complete transition by December 31, 2025.
