A significant fire overnight at a commercial complex near William P. Hobby Airport in Houston required the attention of emergency crews and impacted several buildings within the complex. According to Houston Chronicle, the incident began late yesterday and continued into the early hours this morning.
The Houston Fire Department was alerted to the blaze at around 11:20 p.m., in the 8700 block of Tallyho Road. It was reported by KPRC 2 that more than 100 firefighters were called to the scene, and they worked tirelessly to combat the flames that had spread to multiple buildings. A shelter in place was also requested for a nearby hotel, indicating the scale of the emergency response.
Despite the firefighters' efforts, the flames severely damaged several structures. Houston Fire Deputy Chief J. Pennington noted the enormity of the task facing the crews, saying, "We're talking about large buildings, like 100 feet deep," in an interview obtained by Houston Chronicle. The cause of the fire remained unknown, and an investigation was underway to determine its origin and the extent of the damage.
During the intense firefighting efforts, a distressing moment occurred when a firefighter became separated from their unit, triggering a mayday call. That firefighter, however, found quickly, as reported by OnScene TV, which follows several buildings on the property have burned. In a statement corresponding to the critical nature of the situation, a spokesperson for Houston Airports, Melissa Correa, confirmed via email that operations at Hobby Airport were not affected by the fire.
As the dawn broke today, the firefighters remained vigilant, checking for hotspots to prevent any resurgence of the fire. KPRC 2’s Brittany Jeffers reported from the scene noting that while the flames had been extinguished by 5 a.m., smoke still lingered. The investigation into the fire is ongoing, and as of the last reports, no speculations have been made about the possible cause of the blaze.
