Menallen Township came together in a quiet unity last night to remember a young life tragically cut short. A group of residents from the Village of Searights apartment complex, amongst others, gathered at the local playground for a vigil in memory of two-year-old Margaret Nunn, known fondly as "Maggie," who authorities say was the victim of severe abuse that ultimately led to her death. Details from the somber event were shared by WPXI.
In a tragic realization that abuse knows no boundaries, community member Aimee Tolnai told CBS Pittsburgh that such violence "can happen anywhere, just not in this area or where we live." This sentiment was echoed among attendees, who voiced shock and mourning over the reality that such acts occurred within their midst. Holding candles, the community reflected on Maggie's life and collectively grieved her untimely loss, trying, to embrace the collective hope it may spur change.
The details leading to the vigil are heart-wrenching. Emmanuel Dennis, the fiancé of Margaret's mother, Cecilia Nunn, has been charged with criminal homicide and aggravated assault. Investigators have indicated Dennis admitted to inflicting harm on the child, including kicking her across the hallway to her bedroom the day before she passed away. Fayette County police, who have arrested both Dennis and Cecilia Nunn, allege that she was aware of her daughter's abuse but failed to intervene.
The fallout from the investigation prompted Fayette County District Attorney Mike Aubele to seek the death penalty for both defendants, citing "aggravating circumstances" in the case. The preliminary hearings for the duo are set to take place in early November, reported CBS Pittsburgh. Currently, both suspects are imprisoned in Fayette County Prison.
