The recent unveiling of an alleged puppy scam on the pet adoption platform RescueMe.org has led Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel to take investigative action against an individual using the pseudonym "Abby Stratiskii." The investigation follows claims that Stratiskii falsified vaccine records for a dog sold via the website, as described by the Michigan Department of Attorney General. This scam exploited the trust of animal lovers seeking to adopt pets in need, charging unsuspecting consumers an "adoption fee" of $250 for a dog named Toby, who was advertised as needing rehoming due to an eviction notice prompted by excessive barking.
Last week, the Department issued a set of Civil Investigative Subpoenas to various entities including Facebook, Rescue Me's operators, and PETIQ, LLC, the firm that issued a rabies tag—all in an effort to ascertain the real identity of the alias "Abby Stratiskii." The WNEM report indicated that at least two similar fraudulent listings have been linked to Stratiskii, suggesting a pattern of deceptive behavior.
In a statement, AG Nessel emphasized the dual imperative of safeguarding consumer trust and prosecuting deceitful operations.“Unfortunately, bad actors sometimes take advantage of this generosity. When looking to adopt online, consumers need to be vigilant against those looking to deceive them. My office is dedicated to protecting consumers by investigating and uncovering these scammers and using all available tools at our disposal to hold them accountable,” Nessel said, as quoted in the press release issued by her office.
In the meantime, Nessel has reissued a consumer alert to equip Michiganders with the knowledge to avoid falling prey to puppy scams online. The Attorney General's office is calling for anyone who may have information concerning Stratiskii’s true identity, or who may have adopted a pet from Stratiskii to reach out to the Department’s Consumer Protection Team. Contact details and additional information can be found by visiting the official website or by directly connecting with the consumer protection division. Potential victims and informants are encouraged to utilize the provided online complaint form or the other contact methods available.
