The Milwaukee Bucks' owners are looking to bring a new WNBA team to the city. Although there's no set timeline for a decision, it seems Milwaukee could soon host women's professional basketball again, according to FOX6 News.
Vying alongside Milwaukee for the potential expansion are cities like Philadelphia, Austin, Kansas City, and Cleveland—each with its own aspirations of being next in line for a WNBA team. As reported by WISN 12 News, the sports scene in Milwaukee has flirted with professional women's basketball since the days of the Milwaukee Does which, having hoop dreams dashed, saw its end nearly five decades ago.
The bid submitted by the Bucks ownership marks a potential turning point in the city's sports history, bringing with it the echoes of past endeavors into the realm of female-led athletics. With the WNBA having just capped off one of its most-watched seasons in a quarter-century, the timing could be prime for expansion. This sentiment is bolstered by a report from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, which confirms the Bucks' initiative within a larger narrative of growth for the league.
Enticing as it may be for fans, officials have remained tight-lipped about the specifics of the bid. Sports Business Journal, which was among the first to report on the expansion proposals, notes that along with the aforementioned cities, locales like Miami, Central Florida, Nashville, Charlotte, and Denver have also thrown their hats into the ring, looking to net their own WNBA franchises.
